Teresa’s Note: August 25, 2023

*|MC:SUBJECT|*

Dear friends and members of University UMC:

Throughout the month of August we’ve been looking at Old Testament families of the Bible. First we took a look at Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden. We remembered that we are created in love. Our identity is not centered in original sin. It is centered in original blessing. For God has created us in their image. The Divine Spark alive in you. Then we looked at the story of brothers Jacob and Esau -  and were reminded that as a church family, we look after one another and care for one another. Next we considered the story of Moses and found that we are called to love all God’s children - even those who we might consider stranger, foreigner. And this weekend we welcome Rev. Dr. Amy Laura Hall who will preach on the Book of Ruth. Ruth contains the well-known passage “Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God”(Ruth 1:16-17) that is often heard at weddings.

During this sermon series, we’ve had different images of The Tree of Life on the cover of our bulletins. The Tree of Life is a widespread archetype found in many religions and mythologies. The symbol speaks to the life source that connects all living beings and embodies the mysterious cycle of life and death. I leave you below with a few quotes I came across involving the tree of life. I’m also including the Franciscan Benediction I used in worship last week that many of you have asked about. Indeed, may God bless us with enough foolishness to believe we can make a difference in the world and do that which others claim cannot be done.

What a joy to be your pastor!

The greatest attribute of God is Love. The Tree of Life is located in the very depth of our soul. The most perfect and abundant fruit that grows and ripens is Life giving Love; it is the great healing force in the world. Love never fails to meet every demand of the human heart. The Divine principal of Love may be used to eliminate every sorrow, infirmity, in-harmony, ignorance and all mistakes of mankind. Love is God; eternal, limitless, changeless, infinite. It is the pulse of the world, the heartbeat of the Universe.

- the late spiritual writer Baird T. Spalding

I see a time of Seven Generations when all the colors of mankind will gather under the Sacred Tree of Life and the whole Earth will become one circle again.

- Crazy Horse

Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb through the middle of the street of the city. On either side of the river is the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, producing its fruit each month, and the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations.

- Revelation 22:1-2

Poem: Tree of Life by Nancy McGowin

Branches of happiness, of love, endless roots of faith, where I planted a seed, now, a place for my friend the owl to sleep

Deep in the soil, in the ginger of the core of the earth, mother nature has given life a masterpiece, a living tree

A tree has been planted, it is growing, standing tall, it is the umbrella of many colors, the shade overhead

The beauty of the world to envy, you are the home for nature, you dwell, to make a perfect landscape, to embrace

Tree to my soul, I feel your branches reaching to life, as a newly winged baby bird leaves their nest, to fly

I yearn to smell your budding leaves, the blossoms, when they open, sending a perfume of heaven scent, so kind

While my soul touches yours, embracing the clouds, with every inch of my body, with all my brain

In the hollow of a tree, I believe in an aging miracle, in memories, the sacred gift, that breathes, in each ring they rein

In the woods, I can see an old wise man face, though time, has come for him to rest, in peace he shall find

To never die, for the forest speaks your name, to plant another seed from your roots, as I gently weep, a happy cry

For centuries to come, to behold, to be free, to live each moment, to be touched in time, as my native blood flows deep

To know this valley, to know the rivers running wild, to know this place, forever to be rooted, forever feeling the rain against my face

While my arms wrap around you, just one more time, as I will always remember, while my heart beats faster, as I whisper a Cherokee chant

Tree of life, you have taken hold of my soul, I will always hunger for your love, as the blue jays sing, and dance, we shall reunite

Franciscan Benediction

May God bless you with discomfort…
Discomfort at easy answers, half-truths and superficial relationships,
Discomfort, so that you will live deep within your heart.

May God bless you with anger…
Anger at injustice, oppression, and exploitation of people,
Anger, so that you will work for justice, freedom, and peace.

May God bless you with tears…
Tears to shed for those who suffer pain, rejection, starvation and war,
Tears, so that you will reach out to comfort them
And turn their pain into joy.

And, may God bless you with foolishness…
Foolishness to believe that you can make a difference in this world,
Foolishness, so that you will do what others claim cannot be done.
Amen.
