Dear friends and members of University UMC:

It is a joy to journey through this Advent season with you and I am filled with anticipation about the ways God will continue to show up in our midst as we look to Christmas Eve services. I am grateful for the staff, choir, and many volunteers who are working hard and sharing their creative gifts as worship services and other events come together. In worship Sunday, our Children’s Director, Jillian, asked the children if they were expected to tidy up their room when company was coming. It was such a fitting mention as Trustees were organizing a clean up day after worship. Thank you, thank you! to all who came out to help. While there will always be more to do in the area of cleaning up (just like our homes!), we made great progress thanks to all our volunteers. Hymnals were straightened up, and loads of pens and pencils retrieved from under pew cushions. Windows were washed, and mulch was placed on the southside of the campus.

As I think about this good work, I imagine that, in large part, we are making this beloved, sacred space ready to receive guests. As we look to Lessons and Carols on December 10, Christmas pageant on December 17, and Christmas Eve services on December 24, let us join together in preparing our hearts to welcome newcomers. Let’s have our eyes open to members who might be returning for the first time in awhile and to those who are worshiping with us for the first time. And as I shared in worship Sunday, may we all exercise our muscle to invite this season - inviting friends, neighbors, relatives and co-workers to join us in worship.

One of our special services this year is the “Longest Night” service to be held in the chapel at 7:30 pm on Tuesday, December 19. The Longest Night service, also called, “Blue Christmas,” has become an important part of many church calendars in recent years. In this service, we are intentional about holding space for all who find the holiday season difficult because of various reasons, including mourning the death of a loved one, loneliness, and lamenting the concerns of the world. Several of the resources being shared at this upcoming Longest Night service are also included below. Take a look and share with others. I’m also including the quote by Howard Thurman used in my December 3 sermon inviting us to “Center Down!” as well as the link to the “This I Believe” website.

In Sunday’s children’s time, Jillian also invited us to take a moment to simply be present and take in the sights, sounds and smells of the season. I pray you have moments to be still, breathe deep, and even dream a little in this season that can be filled with busyness and activity.

What a joy to be your pastor!

Resources for a “Blue Christmas”

Invitation to ‘Center Down!’

by Howard Washington Thurman

How good it is to center down!

To sit quietly and see one’s self pass by!

The streets of our minds seethe with endless traffic;

Our spirits resound with clashing, with noisy silences,

While something deep within hungers and thirsts for the still moment and the resting lull.

With full intensity we seek, ere thicket passes, a fresh sense of order in our living;

A direction, a strong sure purpose that will structure our confusion and bring meaning in our chaos.

We look at ourselves in this waiting moment—the kinds of people we are.

The questions persist: what are we doing with our lives?—what are the motives that order our days?

What is the end of our doings? Where are we trying to go? Where do we put the emphasis and where are our values focused? For what end do we make sacrifices?

Where is my treasure and what do I love most in life?

What do I hate most in life and to what am I true? Over and over the questions beat upon the waiting moment.

As we listen, floating up through all of the jangling echoes of our turbulence, there is a sound of another kind—

A deeper note which only the stillness of the heart makes clear.

It moves directly to the core of our being. Our questions are answered,

Our spirits refreshed, and we move back into the traffic of our daily round

With the peace of the Eternal in our step.

How good it is to center down!
