These are good words for us all - recent graduates and long-ago graduates alike. Today is the first day of a short but hopefully meaningful silent retreat I am attending. Early on in my ministry, my spiritual director invited me to consider a time of silent retreat each year. While daily spiritual practices are valuable, I have found through the years the importance of also taking time apart to be still and quiet. Being alone in the presence of God is one of the ways I can, in the words of Thurman, “listen to the sound of the genuine” in myself.
I will miss being with you in worship this Sunday and know you will be blessed as Pastor Earl preaches and the Sanctuary Choir sings before a small summer break. I look forward to viewing the service on our YouTube channel early next week. Worship in recent weeks has been especially meaningful thanks to you, the Spirit moving among you, and the incredible and creative team of staff members with whom I get to work. I’m placing below the link to last week’s Pentecost worship service, including the special music by some of our youth.
Clare began middle school just after I was appointed as your senior pastor. So it’s hard for me to believe I’ve been at UUMC three years, too! I am so very honored to serve alongside you. You are an incredible faith community and I’m grateful for the ways you have welcomed and cared for my family and me. With each passing month, you help me learn and grow. And just as I pause to consider my daughter’s transition from middle school to high school, I look to our future together with great joy and prayerful anticipation.
What a joy to be your pastor!
