The Power of Dreams
by Renee Moreno

Our dreams have a purpose. A purpose beyond the “revelations of our psyche” taught in Psychology classes. I believe there’s a divine power to dreams, pointing us in directions we need to go.

I developed this belief from years of first-hand experiences with my “long-distance” friends. Friends who don’t necessarily live far away from me but I don’t talk to often. Friends whose hopes and happiness I care about as if they were my own, even if I hear about them through an Instagram post. Sometimes, these friends appear as a character in my dreams as I sleep; other times, a memory of them pops into my head unprompted during the day. When they feature in my dreams, sleeping or waking, I take it as a sign to reach out.

When I follow the guidance of my dreams and catch up with them, I often find them at pivotal moments in their lives. Moving across the country, buying their first house, losing a loved one. And maybe it’s the stage of life my friends and I are in. That everything is still so in flux for us. But I’d like to believe that there’s a reason they featured in my dream or I saw the exact car they drive three times in a single week. I’d like to believe that I was meant to be their cheerleader or shoulder to cry on.

So, I’ll keep reaching out. And I’ll keep believing in the purpose of my dreams.

Mary got up and hurried to a city in the Judean highlands. She entered Zechariah’s home and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the child leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. With a loud voice she blurted out, “God has blessed you above all women, and he has blessed the child you carry. Why do I have this honor, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? As soon as I heard your greeting, the baby in my womb jumped for joy. Happy is she who believed that the Lord would fulfill the promises he made to her

Advent: the time to listen for footsteps – you can’t hear footsteps when you’re running yourself.
