New Possibilities
by Sandy White

Have you ever had a dream in which you discovered one or more new rooms in your home? I don’t recall when this first happened to me, but I remember how much it surprised me. Over the past 20 years or so, these dreams have recurred several times, although each version was new and different. In one dream, I discovered wide expanses of lawns and flowers. Sometimes I would open a door and discover an entire wing of my house, fully furnished but otherwise untouched!

Experts say such dreams can mean that there are important areas in your life you may be neglecting, or where you have new opportunities for growth. New rooms are like an extension of yourself. Although some people may find these dreams confusing or disappointing, for me they raised questions about what gifts and graces I was not using fully. Ultimately, they awakened positive thoughts that helped me discover new aspects of myself.

Sometimes these expansive dreams happen because you’ve been changing and growing, and only now can these new ways of being become possible. (My husband says it’s like playing a video game, when you have to “level up” by completing certain tasks or gaining new resources before you can advance to the next level of the game.)

In the Bible, God often speaks through dreams. Perhaps a vision of new rooms means God has new possibilities in store for you!

In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?
— John 14:2

Be still and know that I am Love.
Awaken! Befriend justice and mercy;
Do you not know you bear my Love?
Who among you will respond?”
O Blessed One, You know all hearts,
You are ever with us;
may Love ever guide our lives!
— Psalm 46:10-11 (Nan Merrill translation)

Into this world, this demented inn in which there is absolutely no room for him at all, Christ comes uninvited.
— Thomas Merton
