Purposeful Dreams
by Ed Smith

I’ve never understood the expression, “I hope all your dreams come true.” We all have had dreams that we would not want to come true. Dreams of falling from high places or flying spider pigs chasing you. I never dreamed that second one, but if I had, it’s not a dream I would want to come true. Obviously, when people wish this sentiment upon others, no one is thinking about these types of dreams.

The dreams we hope come true are our purposeful dreams, the dreams we dream while conscious because those who dream are the architects of a better future, the visionaries who dare to imagine what others might dismiss as impossible. Dreamers are the individuals who possess the ability to see beyond the confines of the present, allowing their minds to explore uncharted territories of possibility. They are the driving force behind progress, innovation, and change in the world.

Dreamers often display remarkable resilience in the face of adversity. Their unwavering commitment to their visions empowers them to overcome obstacles, no matter how insurmountable they may seem. Whether it’s inventors like Thomas Edison, civil rights activists like Martin Luther King Jr., or pioneers in any field, dreamers are the ones who persevere in the face of doubt, criticism, and setbacks.

Those who dream inspire others to join them on their journeys. Their passion and determination are contagious, sparking a collective sense of purpose and unity. Through their dreams, they create movements, foster change, and build a brighter future for generations to come. In the end, the world owes much of its progress to those who dare to dream, for they are the ones who propel humanity forward by turning dreams into reality.

I have decided to stick with love. . . . Hate is too great a burden to bear.
— Martin Luther King Jr.

God of promises,
Sometimes we wait generations for the dawn from on high; sometimes only years. We wait for justice and hope and light and kindness to mingle in the tangle of our days. And we age while we hope. So may we age and hope with tenderness and truth. Because you are tender and true even through we sometimes wonder.
Amen.
