We look forward to continuing the celebration by marching in the Austin Pride Parade on August 12. This year, UUMC has purchased a spot in the parade and now it’s time for you to help us represent. So save the date to join us in supporting our queer community!

If you’d like to help us with our float, we’re looking for a flatbed trailer and a truck to pull it. Or, if you’re more artistic, we’ll be decorating on August 11. All hands and volunteers are welcome. If you’ve got skills or equipment to volunteer or if you just have a question, Chad will be more than happy to answer!

More details to come, we’re excited to represent the values of UUMC for all to see!

Cybersecurity Updates

UUMC recently has been subject to a couple different hacks and phishing schemes. We wanted to reach out to you, so you can be protected and informed.

Safety and Security Task Force Update

To help UUMC fulfill its mission to be a place where everyone feels welcome and cared for, church leaders are balancing the complementary goals of hospitality and security. Providing good old Methodist hospitality for visitors and members means having only as many entrances as we can consistently staff with our friendly greeters. As the church staff goes through a season of transition, and as we seek to add more greeters to our hospitality team, the Executive Committee has made the difficult decision to temporarily keep the gates from Guadalupe to the courtyard closed on Sunday mornings. The gates will be opened for exiting when the 11 a.m. service lets out.

We hope to be able to open these gates before worship on Sunday mornings just as soon as possible. This depends on the progress of a couple of projects that are getting underway:

  • Developing a robust courtyard hospitality presence, one that would provide a richer experience for visitors, especially. This will require not only visioning, but also additional staff and volunteer time.

  • Repairing the gates to make them easier to open and close.

In the meantime, other safety and security work continues — please see the updated FAQ list, which includes information on how to join the hospitality team and on where to direct questions about this continuing work.

Join us for worship Sunday July 9 as we receive guest preacher Rev. David McMinn. Rev. McMinn is the Director of Texas Wesley Campus Ministry at The University of Texas, Austin. His sermon “Choosing Abundance” centers on Mark 6:30-44. Rev. McMinn is an ordained elder in the Central Texas Conference of The UMC. He is married to Michelle and together they have two young daughters named Sophie and Amelia.

Coming in July

July 23

The youth will have their annual service trip, and this year they will be heading to Fort Worth to talk about refugees. Fort Worth is one of the central hubs of refugee resettlement. The youth will learn from refugees, non profit leaders, and activists about best practices welcoming and empowering our refugee neighbors.

Coming in August

August Communion Rail Offering:

Habitat for Humanity Build

University UMC and University Presbyterian Church are collaborating on a Habitat for Humanity house building project. The date of the build will be later this Fall. As a partnering church, we are contributing $5,000 to the project and our August communion rail offering will assist us in raising the necessary funds. Stay posted for more details and let Pastor Teresa know if you are interested in being a part of the building day and/or if you have any questions.
