Open Door: Books and Magazines Wanted

UUMC’s new Saturday morning library has been so popular that we are out of material. Do you have books or magazines to share with the unhoused neighbors who visit Open Door and Fig Leaf? Consider donating them! Our guests enjoy popular fiction, nonfiction, general-interest magazines, and religious publications, in English and Spanish. We also see demand for children’s books. Please refrain from offering textbooks, academic or professional journals, or anything you wouldn't consider reading yourself. Boxes of books and magazines may be left in the first-floor elevator lobby, near the bins for clothing donations. Thank you!

Events

Join us for worship this Sunday! It’s the middle of summer and Pastor Teresa’s sermon is entitled “Family Road Trip!” We will hear a New Testament lesson about Jesus calling the disciples and we will consider God’s call on our own life. With the changing landscape of religion in our culture, the metaphor of being on a road trip just might provide some helpful lessons! We’re glad to have our Sanctuary Choir back with us and we will continue singing some of the hymns you requested earlier this summer.

“Sometimes the most scenic roads in life are the detours you didn’t mean to make.”

– Angela N Blount

“God made the world round so we would never be able to see too far down the road.”

– Isak Dinesen

Coming in July

July 23

The youth will have their annual service trip, and this year they will be heading to Fort Worth to talk about refugees. Fort Worth is one of the central hubs of refugee resettlement. The youth will learn from refugees, non profit leaders, and activists about best practices welcoming and empowering our refugee neighbors.

Coming in August

August Communion Rail Offering:

Habitat for Humanity Build

University UMC and University Presbyterian Church are collaborating on a Habitat for Humanity house building project. The date of the build will be later this Fall. As a partnering church, we are contributing $5,000 to the project and our August communion rail offering will assist us in raising the necessary funds. Stay posted for more details and let Pastor Teresa know if you are interested in being a part of the building day and/or if you have any questions.

We look forward to continuing the celebration by marching in the Austin Pride Parade on August 12. This year, UUMC has purchased a spot in the parade and now it’s time for you to help us represent. So join us in supporting our queer community!

If you’d like to help us with our float, we’ll be decorating on August 11. All hands and volunteers are welcome. Click here to let us know you’re interested!

More details to come, we’re excited to represent the values of UUMC for all to see!
