MLK March
The annual MLK March is this coming Monday. It is predicted to be below freezing with a chance of participation. We will be monitoring the event website (you can access here) for updates on whether the march happens, but if it happens we will be there! You are welcome to park for free at the church parking lot off of 25th but the platinum lot will be pay to park. This year we are planning on meeting at the MLK statue on UT’s campus at 9 am for a short program and then continue on with the march to the south steps of the Capitol for a rally. At this point, you can decide to walk back to your car or finish the march by walking to Huston Tillotson. If you continue to Huston Tillotson please remember to find transportation back to your car (either arrange for someone to pick you up, uber, or ride the bus.)
Guest Preacher: Rev. Dr. Marcus Freeman
Join us for worship Sunday, January 14 as we remember the legacy of MLK, renew our baptism and welcome guest preacher Dr. Marcus Freeman.
Dr. Freeman is District Superintendent of the Capital and Crossroads District of The UMC. Following worship, Dr. Freeman will preside at a brief called Church Conference as the congregation votes to approve an anti-racist statement.
The statement was written by members of the Racial Justice Task Force and approved by the Church Council in Fall 2023. In addition to workshops and study, the approval of the statement fulfills aspects of a resolution adopted by the Church Council and shared with the congregation. Learn more about the statement on the Racial Justice page!
Unlearning White Supremacy
Racial Justice Taskforce presents Unlearning White Supremacy class as a 5th Sunday joint Sunday school class this month. Please come and join this meaningful opportunity to learn more about the deeply rooted White Supremacy in our society and have some conversation about the ways we can make changes.
World Day Against the Death Penalty Interfaith Prayer Vigil
Faith leaders, including Pastor Teresa, and anti-death penalty advocates will provide remarks at an Interfaith Vigil on Tuesday, October 10. TCADP and Texas Conservatives Concerned About the Death Penalty will hold a World Day Against the Death Penalty vigil from 12:00 to 1:00 PM in front of the Texas State Capitol in Austin (on the sidewalk in front of the gates on 11th St). On that same day, Texas is scheduled to execute Jedidiah Murphy, a Jewish man who has spent more than 20 years on death row.
Book Party for Rev. John Elford
You are invited to this exciting party to celebrate Rev. John Elford's recent publication of “Our Hearts Were Strangely Lukewarm: The American Methodist Church and the Struggle with White Supremacy.” There will be a conversation about racism and White supremacy in the church, the main theme of the book, with a panel composed of Chad Seales, David White.
